The mission of Oil Drum Art is to recycle used 55-gallon oil drums by having artists transform them into meaningful artworks. 

The oil drum is a powerful metaphor that reflects many of society’s issues about oil – the environment, global warming, the economy, the energy crisis, our carbon footprint, and the Middle East conflict. It also reflects the positive aspects of the fossil fuel that has provided us with so many of our needs and comforts in the past century.

To accomplish its goal Oil Drum Art uses art exhibitions as a format for bringing the artist’s commentaries to the public.  Its New England grass roots are expanding into New York City and the rest of the United States.  Then it will spread throughout the world. Eventually artists worldwide will send their drum artworks to America for the first International Oil Drum Art Exhibition. This exhibition will mark the beginning of an international forum for meaningful dialogues between art and society and perhaps make a difference.
